Langtang Region

Trekking in the Langtang Region

The region north of Kathmandu offers a multitude of trekking destinations, all accessible without flights. The major areas are Lang tang, Gosainkund and Helambu, which can be combined in many different ways to make treks lasting from seven to 16 days. Langtang treks offer an experience not found elsewhere. The trails are challenging with long, steep climbs and descents, often through deep forests or across glacial mountain views and interesting villages with well-established lodges.

Highlights

HIGHLIGHTS

One of the nearest trekking destinations from Kathmandu lies an unparalleled combination of natural beauty and cultural riches of Lang tang, Rasuwa. Linked by roads, this region offers a life unfolding and unique experience.

Previously a restricted area near the Tibetan border, the unexplored regions of the Langtang National park has recently been developed into the Tamang Heritage Trail. The people in this place are mostly of Tamang and Tibetan origin, whose culture goes back to hundreds of years. The craftsmanship, dress, traditionally built stone houses and the beautifully carved wooden porches reflect the solitude and the serenity of the Himalayan scenery.

Tamang Heritage Trek | 6 days
April 27, 2016

I am a solo traveler from France and I decided to do the Tamang Heritage Trek because I wanted to have a cultural, human and sportive experience at the same time. I wanted to discover real Nepal and experience a different culture with a trekking challenge. To be honest, this trek was just an amazing experience regarding to all I wanted to do. Tamang people are the most pure and welcoming people I’ve ever seen in my life. They offer you everything they have even if they are the poorest people in Nepal. Also, they have such a rewarding cultural background which is completely different from all the people and ethics I could have met in Kathmandu area.

To finish, this trek was a real Nepali immersion experience because I had the opportunity to see how this area was damaged and affected by the earthquake of April 2015. But also, I saw how those people are working so hard night now to rebuild those villages. It was the inspiring lesson of my life. Definitely, a trek to do if you want to experience real Nepal and to be immersed in a new culture.

Tamang Heritage Trek

Firstly we would like to say thanks to all the staff at 'Socialtours' HQ for the extra mile they go to make things run as smoothly as possible. Their knowledge and groundwork helped make the trek a most enjoyable and memorable affair.
Their responsible and environmental attitude is always at the forefront of the organization. The trek itself was fantastic in the area visited was quiet and it felt like you were away from any bustle of larger, more populated (by trekkers) trekking trails. The small villages visited on the trek were very new to visitors and were very welcoming. It was also good to see that these small places were benefitting from tourism with very low impact on their way of life.
The trek itself was spectacular. The scenery outstanding, and the quiet undisturbed feel to the trails meant that encountering wildlife was a daily surprise. My partner and I went as a party of 2 with 1 guide and 1 porter, which made the trip all the more pleasant and personal in my opinion. We made 2 very good friend on the trek.
Overall this was one of the best trekking holidays we have been on (and we have been on manyaround the world ) We would highly recommend this trip and especially this trekking company to anyone looking for a true sense of adventure and wonder... Langtang & Gosainkunda

Sheila&NigelWe had the most wonderful time on a Langtang trek with socialtreks. It is important to us that a travel company takes responsible travel seriously, as were very happy with the guidance on this that we received, and also knowing that the guide and porter are properly treated. Our guide was excellent at motivation and looking after us when one suffered from altitude sickness. Both guide and porter helped at all times to make us comfortable. Lodges were simple but provided hot food, heated water or solar showers and the best views imaginable. We really felt we were off the beaten track at various stages of the trek which was tailored to our abilities.
And best of all we got engaged half way round – the place (Sing Gompa) was so beautiful I think Nigel could not help himself!

Trekking for Health (Langtang), Jungle Safari & Heritage Tour
21 days | Aug - Sep 2007

I had a truly wonderful 14 day trek!  As a visually impaired woman traveller it is often hard to find the right trip but on this Trek for Health I felt well cared for, safe, empowered and respected. It was tough going at first , that goes without saying, but every day bought new adventure, landscapes and people.  My team were wonderful and there was much singing and laughter. I would do it all again tomroow if I could!

Helambu Culture Trail

mshaw 1Rather unexpectedly, one of the most important positive points from the trek was a spiritual element. This is not easy to explain. As instances, twice I found myself staring at superb views and doing so for much longer than I would do normally. My thoughts were centred around the awe these inspired. I was asking myself why these particular landscapes generated such thoughts. It was not just the magnificence of the scenery but my interaction with it. I could not answer as to why such a vista made that impression when, for instance, a view of a different valley, or Pashupatinath (which I really enjoyed) did not. I am not in the least concerned that no answer was forthcoming; the value came from the opportunity to sit and reflect which I could not have done other than in those settings. The photo attached was taken just after dawn at Thadepati. It was most certainly not taken to try to picture these thoughts but, on viewing my pictures at home, I realised that it came a little towards putting those reflections into a picture.
