Approximately rectangular in shapes the land is spread on approximately 885 kms east-west and 145 kms. at its narrowest to 241 km at its broadest north south. Nepal is bordered by China from North and India from South, East and West.

Nepal is a developing country with an agricultural economy. In recent years, the country's efforts to expand into manufacturing industries and other technological sectors have achieved much progress. Farming is the main economic activity followed by manufacturing, trade and tourism. The chief sources of foreign currency earnings are merchandise export, services, tourism and Gurkha remittances. The annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is about US$ 4.3 billion.

Climate
With varied topography and altitude featured diversity in the weather and climate, Nepal, in general, has four seasons: spring (March-May), summer (June-August), autumn (September- November) and winter (December- February). People and Culture

Nepal is a country of rich socio-cultural diversity. Concentrating upon particular geographic pockets or regions, 23.2 million people of more than 60-caste or ethnic groups are peacefully living in the country. Diversity in terms of ethnicity, language, cultures and religion and harmony as well as peaceful coexistence are the characteristic feature of Nepalese society. From the very early period the migrants from the east, the north and the south entered the land and settled there with the natives. They are the Nepalese people ethnically, all native Nepalese representing different group fall either in Indo-Aryan or Tibeto-Burman family. The Bramhins, Kshytriyas, Newars, Tamangs, Thakuris, Tharus, Dhimals, Yadavs, Rais, Limbus, Sherpas, Gurrungs, Magars, Thakalis are some of the major sects of Nepalese Society.

Political System
The major feature of the new constitution is the adoption of Parliamentary System of Government based on multi-party democracy with a constitutional monarchy. The concept of the rule of law is enshrined within an independent judicial system. The constitution also guarantees the safeguard of the basic human rights, freedoms and equality. The constitution affirms that Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, democratic, independent, indivisible, sovereign Hindu and constitutional monarchial kingdom.

International Relations

Nepal's foreign policy objectives are guided by the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the nonalignment. As such, Nepal enjoys cordial relations with all the countries of the world. This is also manifested by the expansion of diplomatic relations which has reached 113 countries in 1999. Through 18 residential embassies, 4 consulates and numerous honorary consul generals/ consuls abroad, Nepal is striving to consolidate bilateral and multilateral relations with friendly countries and international organizations.
