Following the Living Goddess

On a beautiful Saturday morning in Kathmandu, the GO LOCAL series of products at socialtours got  launched with the Kumari Trail City Walk. Led by Sarita, who is an expert on the Living Goddess tradition in Nepal, the seven participants went on a three hour walk in the ‘inner’ city of Kathmandu. Along the way, they learnt about the tradition behind the Living Goddess (Kumari Devi), who is a Hindu Goddess, yet born of Buddhist parents.

Starting at Kathmandu Durbar Square, the route is one of the three routes taken by the Living Goddess, and the only one where you rarely find tourists. Off the beaten in the heart of Kathmandu.
Living Goddess, known as Kumari Devi in Nepal, has an immense importance to both Hinduism and Buddhism. This tradition dates back to the 13th century and the history behind the formation of such a tradition is vague and has many different beliefs.
Once the Kumari is chosen, her upbringing is done in a house at Kathmandu Durbar Square named as Kumari Ghar. She lives there and only thrice in a year, she gives a visit to the town. Every time she takes a different route to travel around in a Chariot. We follow one of these routes during this trip, which snakes through the inner city, which during the 13th century was the city boundary itself.
Kathmandu is also home to the culturally rich Newar community, who live in this area. This trip also takes a deep look into the traditions and lifestyle of this community, something that you would not find in a guidebook.
Starting comfortably at 1030, this trip ends with lunch at the famous Freak Street, close to Kathmandu Durbar Square.
