Voluntourism - The Joy of Giving

people12

Voluntourism is fast being recognised worldwide as one of the best ways to experience a country. You get in touch with people, get to know cultures, and work seems to be a connecting point somehow, which leads to great experiences, not to mention that you go back having made an impact.

It is also a great way to learn about yourself, and the experiences enrich people tremendously. We offer different placements, very nominally priced, as we believe that volunteers are coming and giving their time and effort, and though we do need to be paid for a service we provide, we should not be excessive and provide easy means for this intercultural experience to happen.

Volunteering in Nepal can be a very fulfilling. You immerse yourself in the local culture which is laid back, rich in philosophy and art, and is very friendly and tolerant towards other cultures. This will lead to a very rich learning experience. We combine the volunteer period with tailored soft adventure activities that Nepal offers like hikes, culture tours, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, rafting, trekking etc. so that the trip is complete. These can vary in length and activity depending on interests, budgets and time available.

Placements can be varied and given time, will be tailored to every field of interest. As we are based in the country, we will communicate extensively between you and the point of placement in order to tailor the placement so that it is the best fit for the organization as well as yourself.

Combining volunteer work with travel is the best way to see this country. A typical package will involve a short culture tour of the city to acquaint you with the place and the culture. Thereafter, you start on your volunteer placement in earnest (which will be tailored to your interests and will involve you staying at a guesthouse or a home stay) and will include language classes to enhance your basic Nepali skills.

In Nepal, we manage ground logistics for organisations such as United Planet and People and Places. Of course, we also run our own volunteer opportunities for a very reasonable placement fee.

Procedure, Voluntourism
The process is simple. Just fill in the short form that will be sent to you with your details aimed at finding out what your skill levels and interests are, so that we can use the information to customize the placement for a perfect fit. This is crucial as with experience, you learn that volunteering can be sometimes not mutually beneficial and hence, customizing is very important.

We will then come back to you with a suggested placement fitting with your interests, and make a full package recommendation and cost based on your requirements.

Areas of volunteering
The areas are numerous and placements can be found for virtually any area of interest. General areas of volunteering in Nepal are teaching (English, science, mathematics) and helping in orphanages, and other service oriented NGO's.

Most of these Non-Governmental Organizations are looking for volunteers who can revamp websites, write brochures, photo-document, improve fund raising skills etc. Openings are also always there for areas such as like psycho counseling, physiotherapy, nursing and other specialized medical skills. Private sector organizations take in interns, designers, marketing specialists, business planners, personnel managers, finance managers, and IT personnel. At the same time, placement can also be found for skill areas as varied as town planning, pest control, gardening etc.

Location, Period and Stay Arrangements

Most placements take place in and around the capital Kathmandu, with some specific placements taking place in trekking areas and in other towns and villages of Nepal.

The period of volunteering depends entirely on the custom work which will be determined through extensive communication between organization and the volunteer. General periods start at a minimum of one week to three months. This is an entirely self paid volunteering opportunity. The placement charges cover the placement tailoring, collection from airport, country and organizational briefing (includes information on culture, language etc) welcome dinner and one introductory city tour.

Stay can be arranged in home-stays or hotel stays depending on cultural immersion interests and budgets.

The rest of the Holiday experience
Once you are done with the volunteer placement, we then recommend that you reward yourself with a well earned holiday in Nepal.
Nepal is famous for its trekking, which can be done from as small as a two day hike up to over 30 days of trekking into high altitudes in the Himalayas. Standard hikes/treks cost USD 40 day, except in areas like the Everest Region where the cost is USD 45 per day (guide, porters, meals, stay, permit) not including transportation.

Rafting and Kayaking are the most popular action sports, with Nepal boasting some of the top rivers in the world for white water. Trips last between a days splash to a twelve day expedition, costing USD 40 a day, all inclusive

A trip to the Jungles of Chitwan is considered one of the most popular leisure activities in Nepal, with standard two night packages costing USD 180.- including an elephant safari, meals, stay in a resort, culture walks and other jungle activities.

Mountain Biking is an excellent way to explore Nepal, as you pedal through the myriad trails that Nepal offers. These trips cost USD 55 a day all inclusive and last from a day to 24 days of expedition biking right to Mt. Kailash in Tibet.

For the more adventurous, Nepal has incredible opportunities for Canyoning (USD 50 per day), has the second highest Bungee in the world (USD 70), is the second best location in the world for paragliding (USD 75 tandems).

Whatever activity you choose, it will be an excellent way to end a memorable trip to Nepal, full of exposure and complete fun
