'Responsible' Initiatives

Since it started in 2002, socialtours.com has been working on various 'responsibility' issues. The company was developed under the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility, and tries to work with its vision, mission and values in context of everything it does.

These principles have guided the company to develop a responsible tourism policy and over the years, it has been involved in several initiative, be it improving the energy usage situation in the workplace, developing practices for continuous employee development, working with national and international partners in broadening the knowledge and practices in this field, contribution into social initiatives like the Bagmati River Festival in Nepal, etc.

Read more about these initiatives that we are have developed, initiatated and are involved, in this section.

Since August 2008, we are also working closely with Jenefer Bobbin, who is working with us in developing a custom internal audit of responsible practices. Within this, we are reviewing our responsible tourism policy, breaking it down to action elements and developing indicators and reports to find where we are. Since we believe that responsible tourism is a continuous work in progress, this will help us evaluate and reevaluate where we stand, and help us keep moving in the right direction. Reports, audits, systems will be shared in this section in the future. This work is being supported and guided by Harold Goodwin of the International Center for Responsible Tourism, under whom Jenefer is studying towards a Master in Responsible Tourism degree.

  • Policies, Guidelines etc...   ( 4 Articles )

At the very start of the company, socialtours.com adapted, modified and endorsed a guideline for travelling responsibly in Nepal. The guideline talks about how travellers can make an impact by reducing their impacts while travelling.

We then worked on a responsible tourism policy, which guides how we work...

  • Intiatives: responsibility starts at home   ( 3 Articles )
The environment has been one of the topics close to the heart at socialtours.com, triggered by a strong belief that this is our chief asset. Using every means to reduce energy consumption and waste is one step in this vast task. socialtours.com plays its part, in small ways. We know the road is long in this process, but we are making slow but steady inroads.
  • Partners in Cultural Exchange   ( 3 Articles )

At socialtours.com we believe that tourism is all about cultural exchange, and this is the only way to actually achieve peace in the world. Several of our trips focus therefore on transfer of cultural understanding. However, at another level, socialtours.com works with select organisations worldwide to provide opportunities for volunteers and organisations to come in real contact with people and make a difference in thier lives.

The learning from this work is tremendous for all people involved, the volunteers, the people and organisations they make an impact on, and us as a company working to finding creative ways to fulfill our moral and social obligations to society.

  • Collaborations in RT   ( 1 Article )

    people1

From time to time, socialtours.com gets involved in special collaborations to expand the knowledge of responsible tourism, sometimes for our own good, and largely to also spread the news. Some such collaborations are included in this section.

  • Responsible Tourism Audit   ( 1 Article )

In the summer of 2008, we signed up voluntarily towards an effort at designing a system for custom Responsible Tourism Audits. This was spearheaded by Jenefer Bobbin and Prof. Harold Goodwin, International Center for Responsible Tourism, UK. In 2008, Jenefer spent almost five months with socialtours, studying our RT policy, designing indicators and a system for the collection of data which would enable us to audit ourselves, and then get external mediators to check them.

We believe it is imperative that this is done, so that we find out where we are, and find ways and means as how to improve ourselves on the responsibility front, on a continual basis.
