Gangtey/Gogana trek, 8 days

This trek is to the beautiful Phobjikha valley. Phobjikha valley lies at an altitude of 3000metres in the mountains east of Wangduephodrang and it is one of the few glacial valleys in Bhutan. This quiet, isolated valley is the chosen winter home of the rare black necked cranes, which migrate here annually from the Tibetan plateau.
The trek is pleasant walking through the villages of Gogona and Khotokha passing through meadows and fields and then coming to the forests of Juniper, Magnolia and Rhododendrons. The trek is of moderate level and is considered one of the finest low level treks in Bhutan.

Best time: March - May; September - November (Rhododendrons are in full bloom)

itinerary

Day 01: Thimpu

Arrival in Paro aiport. Drive to Thimpu which is 54 km away from Paro.
Overnight at the hotel in Thimpu

Day 02: Thimpu- Gangtey
After breakfast, set off on a morning tour of Thimpu, visiting
National Memorial Chorten, Tashichhodzong, National library and Institute for Zorig Chusum (traditional arts and crafts school of Bhutan)
After lunch, drive for about 5 hours to Gangtey crossing Dochu-la pass (3,088m) on the way.

Day 03: Gangtey Gompa- Gogona, 15 km, 6-7 hours
Trek commences from today. The trail windes gradually upwards through meadows and fields, ascending to Tsele-la pass (3,400m) where we stop for lunch. The trail descends gradually for some time through forests of junipers, bamboo, magnolias and rhododendrons.
We reach Gogona village. The people of Gogona were originally nomads and they speak a language called Bjopkha.

Day 04: Gogona – Khotokha, 16 km, 6-7 hours
The trail winds up gently above Gogona village, climbing into a forest of firs, oaks, spruces, rhododendrons, cypress and junipers. After a long and gradual climb, we reach Shobju-la pass (3,400m). We descend down the path to the wide valley of Khotokha where the people of Sha come in summer to graze their animals.

Day 05: Khotokha – Chazam/ Wangduephodrang, 12km/ 5 hours
A short ascent takes us to a pass from which the path descends steeply through ever changing vegetations till finally we reach the bridge at Wangduephodrang.
Trek ends here. Overnight at hotel in Wangduephodrang

Day 06: Wangduephodrang – Thimpu
After sightseeing, we drive to Thimpu which takes 3 hours.
Evening leisure sightseeing in Thimpu including visits to Folk Heritage and Handicrafts Emporium.

Day 07: Thimpu – Paro
Early morning drive to Paro, en route visiting Smitokha Dzong. Upon arrival in Paro, visit the famous Ta Dzong (National Museum), Rinpung Dzong, Drukgyel Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang.

Day 08: Departure

After breakfast, drive to the airport for departure
